What you'll need

Your business name and contact details, your client's name and address, a description of each item or service with its quantity and rate, and the province the sale applies to. If you're registered for GST/HST, add your registration number so it appears on the invoice — clients often need it visible to claim their own input tax credit.

How the tax is calculated

Whether tax applies at all depends on your registration status, which you set with the checkbox above the tax fields. Once you're registered, the tool picks the right combination automatically: a single GST or HST line in most provinces, or a separate GST plus PST/QST line in British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Quebec — matching the rate to the province you select, not necessarily your own. Each tax line is shown separately and totalled for you, rather than folded into a single number.

What this tool doesn't do

It formats and calculates an invoice from the numbers you enter — it doesn't register you for a GST/HST number, submit anything to the CRA, or verify that you're charging tax correctly for your specific situation. See our guides below for the rules behind each field.
